Short History
Pigtown is a historic community located in southwestern Baltimore that traces its roots back to the 1840’s- when it was settled by railroad workers building America’s first railroad system. This shared history would give rise to Pigtown’s name in the second half of the same century, when cargo railcards from the Midwest would swing open their doors at the nearby platform to unload the pigs. Thus, our community was famously known for its spectacle of pigs weaving through the neighborhood. Today, the pig is a proud symbol of our rich, deep roots, and unique community name. We honor our heritage of the “running of the pigs” each year at our Pigtown Festival featuring the “Squeekness” pig races.
